History of London City Airport

Reg Ward, of the newly formed London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) discussed his idea with Sir Philip Beck, Chairman of John Mowlem and Company plc. Ward wanted an airport to serve the Docklands. This was in 1981. By later in the year, a proposed plan was submitted for a city centre gateway.

The next year saw a plan demonstrating the feasibility of an airport in this area. A formal feasibility study was published by LDDC later that year. After opinion polls showed a general acceptance of the airport coming to the region, Mowlem submitted an application for planning permission.

In 1983, Mowlem agreed to lease land for the airport, and in 1984, he was asked how he plans to control the noise.

In 1986, the Prince of Wales laid the foundation stone for the terminal building and work began. Two events in 1987 are significant. The Mayor of London named the airport and a few months later, The Queen officially opened the airport. Within less than two months 15,000 passengers used the airport.

A 35 minute river bus service was launched in 1988 to take people to and from the airport and central London. The service can handle 133,000 people.

Flexair and Air France opened air service to various cities in Europe as the runway was being planned for extension in 1989. By the end of 1995, more than a half million passengers used London City Airport.

The airport was sold to Irish businessman, Dermot Desmond in 1995. During the next years, the airport won several awards for their service.

1999 showed more improvements at London City Airport. These include a covered dock edge walkway, the remodelling of the terminal business centre and the Jubilee line opening for passengers.
